Distant and isolated, remote heritage sites are inherently difficult to protect. In this paper, examination of the Cold War-era Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line of radar installations in the Canadian arctic, built as a defense system for North America, employing modular and mobile structures, is an instructive case that will hopefully broaden the scope of modern heritage and explain the approaches governments have taken on to enact heritage legislation and policies for these types of sites.
