Abstract

In Morocco, alcohol is forbidden to Muslims, yet bars and some restaurants offer this libation to consumers who are Muslims. In order to sell alcohol, these businesses must organise their dining rooms and practices in such a way as to make them invisible, while customers, for their part, hide their consumption of this forbidden beverage. As a result bar and restaurant spaces where alcohol is served are distinct from other commercial spaces and comparable to residential spaces. The space is neither private nor public, but constitutes one of the many spheres of exchange around alcohol, which together form a separate « world », coexisting with other worlds.
