Aspects de l’histoire de la sociologie en Grèce (1900-1980)
Abstract
Sociology in contemporary Greece has had strong ties with the social, political and ideological evolutions. The discipline of sociology has functioned as a tool of modernization and social paradigm. In addition, the radical political movements of the Left as well of the Right, referred to the sociological theory as a mean of social reform. Major Greek sociological journals, during the 20th century, hosted radical ideas based on sociological theories. After the Second World War, consecutive Greek governments established institutions for scientific sociological research, assisted by the international sociological community. Sociology was also progressively introduced as a field of scientific study in Greek universities. However, major contemporary Greek sociologists (among them Dimosthènes Danielidis, Avrotélis Eleftheropoulos and Constantinos Karavidas and more recently Nicos Poulantzas and Nicos Mouzelis) worked in prestigious European universities but did not connect to the official Greek academicals institutions. That was probably due to their radical ideas, which opposed the structures of dependence and slow economic growth.
