Death to be remembered. Melancholy topographies and images of oblivion in Edgar Allan Poe’s poems
Abstract
This article aims at analyzing Edgar Allan Poe’s poetic language regarding the creation of images and metaphors to talk about death, in special, images of melancholy and oblivion. From the melancholy theoretical point of view and the concept of melancholy, it is also the purpose of this article to make a brief research of the theme, and then an analysis of four poems by Poe: “The Lake”, “The City in the Sea”, “The Coliseum” and “Ulalume”.
