Grammar being a conservative and normative discipline, the student must conform to the teacher’s doctrine. However, indications of an oral pedagogical practice appear in the questions-and-answers manuals, since they find their ideal origin in the dialogue between teacher and students. The structure of the ἐρωτήματα allows the topics covered to be organized in a clear and rational manner and encourages students to take an active part in the learning process. However, the question receives only one answer, brief and essential; when two alternative responses are provided, they are usually based on a long tradition. The form of ἐρώτημα is attested throughout the Roman Empire and Late Antiquity both in Greece and Rome: on the Greek side, it is possible to follow its traces in the grammatical papyri from the 2nd century p. C., in the Technê attributed to Dionysius Thrax, and in the scholia to the Technê itself.
