Abstract

Semantically linked notions of guilt and punishment are realized in biblical Hebrew through collections of roots which carry within themselves idiomatic images. Guilt is first of all – apart from distortion and damage – going astray, lacking prudence, and being separated from the group of relatives and friends against the will of the leader, and losing vital strength.Punishment, on the other hand, is realized through the images of court proceedings, processes of bringing up children, and also violations by beating of bodily integrity.
