The article considers the current state of Russia's steel industry from the point of view of export development and import substitution the industry. In recent years the metals market has a surplus, leading to lower prices. Happened at the same time, the fall of the ruble not only offset this effect, but allowed to withdraw Russian metallurgy in leaders on profitability of sales in the world. However, countries have reacted by imposing protective duties on Russian metal. In these circumstances, the industry has been tasked to expand the development of the domestic market and to minimize the dependence on the supply of metals and products from abroad. The paper presents the results of a study of the opportunities and challenges of solving this problem on the example of the six largest steel companies in Russia.
