Talking about change taking place has become commonplace. Understanding its implications is perhaps quite different. Little do we realise that in discussing change, we use visions and benchmarks that are now obsolete. They have been ground down and sterilised by change itself and are therefore ineffective in making what is happening comprehensible. Added to this is a vision of the world that is increasingly moving towards a dark complexity, irreversibly detaching it from being fully intelligible. We are in the age of the 'Objectoid'. Digital evolution has led form to work by analogy. Evolution is digital, but the form is increasingly analogue: it resembles, alludes to, appears, but does not guarantee its ontology. A form/image that refers to the object without coinciding perfectly with it. The object ceases to be a universe closed within itself, self-contained and opens up to variability and indefiniteness. It is no longer something complete, nor will it ever be complete. It belongs to a network of relationships. It is connected to resources that constantly change its appearance and meaning. It is always changing. The objects we use today are no longer private but participatory, interactive. Design as a motivation needs to reformulate itself into a Neomorphism characterised by innovative performance and structural details. These elements are inseparable from the physicality that objects need to have. However, they are even more fundamental to give substance to the immaterial resources that digital technologies now make possible. It is not essential to have different solutions but to have different ways of thinking.
