In this article I discuss the actual methodological problem of distinguishing between performative, semi-performative and non-performative verbs in charms, associated with the performative nature of the ritual as a communicative act. I propose a hypothesis of the functioning in charm texts of verbs endowed with special ritual semantics, opposed to canonical performatives and non-performative verbs in charms. For convenience, the term “charm semi-performative” was adopted for these lexemes. The idea of semi-performativeness makes it possible to find the lexical, verbal core of charm performativity, not being limited to verbs with the semantics of speech action and at the same time remaining within the framework of linguistic analysis.
