Tradición e innovación en la imagen polibiana del bárbaro

Abstract

RESUMEN: La definición polibiana del bárbaro no resulta tan convencional como tradicionalmente se consideró. Aunque de un modo genérico el historiador de Megalopolis todavía divide la humanidad en griegos y bárbaros, el ascenso de potencias no helénicas como Roma y Cartago y, lo que es más importante, el protagonismo de la primera en las Historias, no sólo condicionan la polaridad helénica tradicional sino que terminan por devaluarla.ABSTRACT: Polybius' definition of barbarians is not as conventional as it has been usually thought. Although this historian divides the mankind into Greeks and barbarians, the rise of non-hellenic powers as Rome and Carthage, and specially the role of the first in the Histories determine, and finally devalue, the traditional Greek polarity.
