In the chemiluminescence process, when the luminescent system and the response substrate undergo a chemical reaction, the dye molecules in the system are excited by the chemical energy generated by the chemical reaction and generate light signals. Since the external excitation light source is not required, the interference of background fluorescence is avoided and the imaging contrast will be improved, making it have unique advantages in in vivo imaging. In addition, the chemiluminescence system can be used as an internal light source to excite the photosensitizer for tumor therapy. In this review, the current type of luminescence systems, including Luminol, peroxyoxalate, 1, 2-dioxetane chemiluminescence system, as well as their luminescence mechanism and structural characteristics are reviewed, and their application in imaging and therapy is summarized. Finally, the development direction of these systems is prospected, and it is revealed that the development of a long-wavelength, high-brightness chemiluminescence system with a new structure is an effective strategy to the improve bioimaging and therapeutic effects.
