Repression in the Spanish Civil War: Latest Bibliographical Contributions and Social Movements by Memory | La represión en la Guerra Civil: últimas aportaciones bibliográficas y movimientos sociales por la memoria
Abstract
Studies on the civil war, and particularly on its most tragic aspect – repression – continue to dominate a large proportion of historical publications in Spain. Together with works of a general character, we should highlight those of a regional scope, which have provided important insights into such recurrent aspects as the figures of those shot by both sides. The results of these studies underline the extent of the tragedy experienced by Spaniards during the war itself as well as during the subsequent dictatorship. This silenced and forgotten past is gradually being reconstructed with the primary aim of uncovering the truth, of discovering exactly what happened as transparently as possible. Along with the research, we should highlight the social movement that has emerged with the aim of recovering the historical memory, and which has sparked a sensitive stance in public institutions towards this matter, to the point that the current Spanish Government has introduced the Law on Historical Memory into parliament for debate and approval. | Los estudios sobre la Guerra Civil, y especialmente sobre su faceta más trágica, la represiva, siguen acaparando buena parte de las publicaciones históricas en España. Junto a obras generales cabe destacar las de contenido territorial, que han permitido avanzar en el conocimiento de aspectos tan recurrentes como las cifras de fusilados por ambos bandos. Sus resultados demuestran el alcance de la tragedia que vivió España durante esa contienda armada y en la dictadura. Un pasado silenciado y olvidado, que se va construyendo de forma pormenorizada, con el firme propósito de conocer la verdad, de saber lo sucedido. Junto a la investigación cabe destacar el movimiento social que se ha generado en torno a la recuperación de la memoria histórica, y que ha originado la sensibilidad de las instituciones públicas hacia este asunto, hasta el punto de aprobarse en el Parlamento la Ley de la Memoria Histórica.
