The efforts to reach universal standards in women’s rights in Turkey, in consideration of women’s representation in politics, cannot resolve the inequities which gender difference causes. The limitations on the representation of women in politics are just one of the different manifestations of gender hierarchy. Despite the rhetoric such as quotas and positive discrimination of women, women are still not in adequate representation. In this study, in order to verify this hypothesis, March 30 (2014) Local Election results are evaluated in terms of the case of Çanakkale. In order to test the problematic of the study, Çanakkale 30 March (2014) local election results and the list of candidates were analyzed and described in tables, and at which rate women are represented has been studied in terms or mayoral nomination, provincial council nomination and municipal council nomination. For all three nomination groups, the number of female candidates of political parties and the winning female candidates were also included in the study. In the case of Çanakkale, the fact that the women could not get a chance to be represented in central and district municipalities and provinces in the mayoral council member confirms the “absence status” thesis in representation. In terms of the election results in Çanakkale the presence of women candidates in local politics gives the impression of a symbolic value and this situation can be stated to coincide with the results across Turkey. Both in academic environment and public administration, the issue of women’s representation in local politics is proposed to overcome through gender-focused approach.
