Authentic podcasts selection for teaching ESP monologue production to students majoring in mechanical engineering
Abstract
The article is devoted to the issue of English podcasts selection within the framework of the methodology of teaching ESP monologue production to students majoring in mechanical engineering. The given methodology envisages the podcasting technology implementation. The key aspect in the accomplishment of the podcasts selection procedure is highlighting the criteria of their selection. The criteria of English podcasts selection are defined by the author of this article not only on the basis of thorough analysis of scientific studies in the corresponding fields, but also taking into account the specificity of teaching foreign language to prospective mechanical engineers. The aforementioned criteria are determined by linguistic, acoustic and psycholinguistic factors that cause difficulties in the process of podcasts comprehension and influence the successful formation of communicative competence in monologue production. The components that define the specificity of teaching foreign language to prospective mechanical engineers incorporate subject and aim of the educational process, requirements of the Ukrainian regulatory documents concerning the level of monologue speaking skills development and thematic modules content for the corresponding year of studies, peculiarities of the educational process arrangement. The linguistic factors comprise phonetic, lexical, grammatical, composition and semantic factors. The acoustic factors are distinguished due to the presence of background noise in authentic podcasts created in real production conditions. The psycholinguistic factors are preconditioned by comprehensibility of information in the podcast, its motivational, informational and problematic value, its credibility and objectivity, professional significance and novelty, duration of the podcast itself. Among the main criteria of podcasts selection the following ones are to be mentioned: the criterion of professional orientation, the criteria of authenticity, reference to a specific situation, motivational value, professional significance, etc.
