Evaluation is a key pedagogical act in the process of teaching and learning foreign languages. It is fundamental and unavoidable in the various education systems. As a didactic act, evaluation establishes a structural link between the learner, the teacher and knowledge. It enables teachers to determine learners’ specific needs and expectations. The evaluation activities assigned in a learning situation depend on the students’ concerns. Considering the implications that evaluation has on the educational process, the following questions arise: What influences does evaluation have on the teaching and learning process? How are students evaluated in German as a foreign language courses? The main aim of this article is to put into perspective and to analyze the mechanisms of evaluation within the teaching and learning process in German as a foreign language course in the university field. The present article, which is addressed in the first place to learners of German as a foreign language at the University of Algiers 2, aims to show the epistemological value of evaluation in that teaching and learning process.
