A family imbroglio: brazil's invasion of the banda oriental in 1816 and repercussions on the iberian peninsula 1816-1820
Abstract
In August, 1816, Brazilian troops entered the Banda Oriental for the second time in five years. The new turn of events dashed all prospects for a Spanish-Portuguese effort against the insurgents of Buenos Aires. Furthermore, it dealt a severe blow to the Spanish pacification scheme in America and set in motion a wave of indignation and inflammed passion among the Spanish nation. And for Continental Europe it created the distinct possibility of another general conflagration.
