This paper analyzes Brazil’s National Guard in the province of Rio Grande do Sul during the second half of the 19th. Century, focusing on the period of administrative centralization of the militia (1850-1873). It aims to reveal the reach of the institution in the Brazilian society, especially in a frontier region in an endemic state of war. From the rosters sent by the superior commanders to the presidents of provinces, and later compiled by the Ministry of Justice, the intermittent military participation ratio is calculated, taking into account the data of the National Census of 1872. The results point to the need for comparative studies in different regions of the country, considering not only the militia itself, but also the presence of Army troops and the electoral system of the country.
