The pau-de-balsa (Ochroma pyramidale (Cav. Ex Lam.) Urb.) is a forest essence that rapid growth, being raw material used in various industries, and for the use in the recovery of degraded areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the initial growth and the quality of pau-de-balsa seedlings submitted to nutritional deficiency. The experiment was carried out from 07/07/2016 to 10/29/2016, in a greenhouse. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with seven treatments and three replications. The treatments, using nutritive solutions, were: complete, containing all essential nutrients (SC); omitting: nitrogen (-N); phosphorus (-P); potassium (-K); calcium (-Ca); magnesium (- Mg) and omitting all nutrients (OA). The seedlings were evaluated at 60 days after transplanting (29/10/2016) for height, stem diameter, root length, dry shoot, root and total biomass, leaf area and Dickson quality index. In all nutritional omissions, there was a reduction in height. The stem diameter was not affected by the omission of Ca. Root growth was not influenced by nutritional omissions. The leaf number, biomass, leaf area and Dickson quality index presented lower averages in the suppression of N, P and all nutrients. N and Ca were the most and least limiting nutrients in the growth and quality of the seedlings respectively.
