Today, as during the Second Empire Brazilian literary criticism has emphasized nationalists or exotic themes of Romanticism. The Indianism of Gonçalves Dias has been overvalued at the expense of other aspects of his compositions because the “Poesias Americanas” has being seen as a symbol of literary autonomy in Brazil. This article aims to point out the constant presence of medievalist aesthetic in the poetry of Gonçalves Dias, in order to show that the poet's work is not restricted to the thematic of ideal Indian hero. Therefore, we analyzed poems from Primeiros Cantos, Segundos Cantos, Novos Cantos, Últimos Cantos and from Sextilhas de Frei Antão indicating the presence of themes, vocabulary, content and medievalist forms. The medievalism in Dias was affiliated to European Romanticism with which Gonçalves Dias dialogued.
