Abstract

Epics serve as a time mirror of many cultures, ethnic groups of society and civilizations. One of the main characters of “Silapathikaram” is Madhavi, who is introduced as Kovalan’s lady love (Concubine). Madhavi becomes the traditional heroine of the epic “Silapathikaram” in the beginning stages. Women have played a vital role in men's lives from birth to death. Madhavi is a character who is created to get a separate place for her from the way. She is pushed as a material object for men's sexual needs for the welfare of men. Madhavi is a heroine who stood alone in the characters of Elangovadikal and fought against her caste traditions. They are the ones who spread good, rare ideas to the community through their dance, stories and songs. Madhavi is a gift to Kovalan in such a way. She loves Kovalan and tries to live decently with him. But Kovalan's love was not fully available to her. She fought for that right. But in the end, she was thrown out. Madhavi rose to the sky with her thoughts and actions by removing the disgrace that was caused by her birth in the devadasi community. This article keenly explores the role of Madhavi, a character who has been a pioneer for women since the beginning of the Epic, fighting for her pleasure and motherhood.
