«The other reader» as an interpretive inspiration and corrective: Some experiences with intercultural Bible reading amongst youths. Based on empirical data of a project where youth groups from Norway, Madagascar and Thailand read two biblical texts together, the essay asks: How can a culturally «other» reader of the Bible serve as an interpretive inspiration and corrective? The two texts being read are Luke 15:11-32, the parable of the prodigal son, and 2 Samuel 13:1-22, Amnon raping Tamar, and the interpretive framework that is used is Hans de Wit’s concept of «reading through the eyes of another.» In conclusion it is argued that such an exposure for peer readers has a role to play today, when traditional interpretive authorities are fading.
