Abstract

Volume 2 Number 2 of transcript brings to you a collection of four research articles and a book review. The opening article “The Oriental Annual[s]: Colonial Representations of Indian life and Culture” by Ayushman Chakraborty deals with the relationship between culture and dominance in the context of colonized India. Although the article deals with two travelogues, in a broader context, Chakraborty’s essay helps us understand how such dominance and representation of culture work in contemporary times. Ashwarya Samkaria’s essay “An Engagement with Life-Place Entanglements: An Ecocritical Reading of Anita Desai’s Fire on the Mountain” demonstrates how “spatial discourse effectively shapes the characters’ mindscapes and ecological visions” in the context of eco-fiction. She elaborates on the effects of ecology on the human mind while positing the effects of human activities on nature. The third article “John Keats and the Sensevil Sublime” by Shouvik Narayan Hore is a structural reading of sublimity and subjectivity in Keats’ poetry within the rubrics of romantic poetry. The fourth article “Rescuing the Repressed: Emancipatory Possibilities of “Everyday” in Anjum Hasan’s Street on the Hill” by Nabanita Paul is a take on the “ordinary” and “commonplace” everyday life of the people. The article tries to articulate the possibilities of emancipation by making a Lefebvrian reading of Hasan’s anthology of poems. The concluding article of this issue is a brilliant review of Amitav Ghosh’s succinct allegorical representation of the relationship between colonization and capitalism in The Living Mountain: a Fable for Our Times. I would like to thank all the editorial members and the peer-reviewers who have devoted their time and energy in making this volume publishable. We are also happy to announce the inclusion of new board members, who have consented to be a part of the editorial team.
