The dispute for the political control of the nation, between liberals and conservatives, reached its critical point by the end of the fifties of the Mexican nineteenth century. In the middle of internal conflicts, the groups in dispute became aware that to strengthen the State and transform the society was necessary to take control of education establishing an educational system centralized and dependent on the State. With this contribution we intend to examine the dispositions that were enacted in educational matters during the Second Mexican Empire and for this purpose we are interested in whether there was rupture or continuity in the educational work that developed under the republican regime first, then the imperial regime and, soon after, review the impact of imperial initiatives in one of the most dynamic peripheral centers of the Mexican territory, the city of Puebla. The elaboration of these reflections is based on the legislation, the official reports of the Second Mexican Empire and the documents of the historic archive of the city of Puebla.
