Appealing to Scripture and its use in mission Appealing to Scripture in mission is very important as far as the essence of salvation is concerned. Different views on appealing to Scripture are in circulation, and one has to confront the question as to whether it is still possible to refer to sin, heaven, hell and salvation. Paul appealed to the Old Testament in a specific way, but he always tried to remain true to Scripture. Calvin emphasised appealing to Scripture as essential. Kuyper did not agree with higher criticism on Scripture, but also warned against a pietistic view of Scripture. Bultmann desired to rid Scripture of mythology, but also had to appeal directly to as- pects of Scripture. In mission, the essential aspects like sin, heaven, hell and salvation still need to be acknowledged though in an exegetically and hermeneutically sound way.
