The article analyzes how the image of the 1814-1820 absolutist restoration in Spain is constructed in both 19th-century liberal historiography and Benito Pérez Galdós’s historical novels, Memoirs of a 1815 courtier and The second jacket. The two key elements that make up the image are the persona of Ferdinand VII and the political crisis leading to the regime’s demise in 1820. The conclusions summarize the similarities and differences between the historical texts and Galdós’s fictional texts
