Purpose. The article analyzes the syncretic genre of oral public speech “lecture” on the material of a lecture on the forest in Russian Forest, a novel by L.M. Leonov (chapter 7, part 2). The relevance of the research is due to the low level of study of the genres of oral scientific monologue and their varieties that have appeared in the modern pattern and combine the features of different functional styles. The intersection of scientific and public discourse in the genre of a popular lecture makes it possible to evaluate the complex interaction of various semiotic aspects and style-forming factors within a given communicative situation. Materials and methods. Works on the theory of speech genres and linguistic pragmatics were used as the methodological base of the research. The main research method is the structural-typological one. During the analysis, the active influence of the communicative situation and meta-frames on the composition and topic of the lecture was revealed; it was found that the reaction to the addressee determines the choice of lexical, stylistic, syntactic means and intra-inclusions (proverb, legend, historical anecdote). The study confirmed the hypothesis of the multi-layered genre of public popular lectures, containing elements of journalistic and scientific discourse.
