During the nineteenth century, French army forces attempted to rule and pacify a defeated country while building villages for Algerians. This experiment will lead to a historic failure. Towns will be deserted by new occupants, quickly leaving empty homes. The reasons for this misfortune will be attributed to the inhabitants that reject “progress” and “human modernity” brought by the French colonial power. It therefore seems useful to look back at this « experiment » with some distance, and build up an archeologic exploration of writings and originations in relation with these towns. Hence enabling a better understanding of the turmoils of an eventful century on Algerian land.
