Sociologies (Jun 2013)
Un Janus bifrons : la sociologie comme discipline universitaire et comme « vocation »
Abstract
Sociologists are back to sociology! But this does not mean they are asking the same questions. The analysis of this debate, that SociologieS initiated, shows that in fact, two debates have been launched; one centred on sociology in research and higher studies, another one on the moral vocation of sociology to speak to non-sociologists. In a world constantly changing, it is then urgent to take these two aspects of sociology into consideration: academic sociology and public sociology according to Michael Burawoy terminology. This supposes to evaluate the conditions in which public sociology is put into practice and to analyse the way academic sociology can address the social need for sociology.
