This paper aims to explore the possibilities that people with disabilities have to develop as independent subjects. With a psychoanalytic orientation, the hypothesis is that the symbolic context and the conception of disability of significant beings will have effects on the constitution of subjectivity and on the educational and work path. For this, the conceptions of disability are reviewed and the importance of the subjective constitution and of a body image, in which disability does not function as the only possible identification, is highlighted. Finally, the characteristics of Gota, an advertising study with workers with intellectual disabilities, are described. It is proved that autonomy is possible, necessarily through a social bond that enables subjectivity.
