Abstract
In 1991, somewhere in Botevgrad locality, treasure hunters discovered with the aid of a metal detector an interesting hoard of gold and silver coins dating to the 16th – early 17th c. Unfortunately the hoard was quickly scattered and the coins were sold mostly to collectors in Sofia. The exact location of the finding spot and the entire content of the hoard remain unknown. We could only ascertain that the silver coins prevailed considerably over the gold ones and that the Ottoman aspra (akce) and the 3 grosz coins of the Polish king Sigismund III were the most numerous amongst the silver coins. Only five coins from this hoard were registered in the numismatic collection of the National Museum of History – Sofia – two gold coins and three silver coins. The gold coins are represented by an altın of the Ottoman sultan Soliman I (1520 – 1566) and an undated ducat of the Principality of Transylvania, minted between 1590 – 1593 in the city of Kampen in the Netherlands. The silver coins are a 3 grosz coin of the Polish king Sigismund III Vasa (1598), a 6 grosz coin of the same king (1596), and a thaler with the name of Ferdinando I de’Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, minted in the city of Pisa.
