Delayed result of successful treatment of pulmonary echinococcosis
Abstract
Background. Echinococcosis is an endemic disease that is accompanied by severe complications and a high recurrence rate. The lack of unified approaches to the choice of surgical treatment and principles of prevention arouses interest in this disease. The objectives of this work are to conduct a brief review of the literature on the problem of echinococcosis of the lungs and to demonstrate a successful long-term result of treatment of a patient with recurrent total echinococcosis of the left lung and left pleural cavity with germination into the pericardium and diaphragmatic nerve after 15 years by performing organpreserving surgery and anthelmintic therapy. Materials and methods. The article considers the case of treatment of a patient with total echinococcosis of the left lung and left pleural cavity. Result. A comprehensive examination of the patient using modern diagnostic methods (chest X-ray and MSCT, ultrasound) increases the effectiveness of diagnosis of a complicated form of echinococcosis of the lungs. Timely surgical treatment with careful suturing of bronchial fistulas in the complex treatment of the patient made it possible to eliminate cystobronchial fistulas and create conditions for the elimination of the residual cavity. The use of anthelmintic therapy in the postoperative period prevented the recurrence of echinococcosis. Conclusions. In patients with pulmonary echinococcosis, it is necessary to strive to perform organ-preserving operations in combination with anthelmintic therapy.
