BARIATRIC SURGERY: A SUCCESSFUL THERAPEUTIC OPTION
Abstract
The bariatric surgery is, until now, the most effective treatment for the management of people with severe or morbid obesity, which is considered with a body mass index (BMI) >40 or >35 when overweight is accompanied by metabolic disease. The most used surgical procedures are the bypass in Y of Roux (BP) and the sleeve or gastric sleeve (GS), which are generally safe and effective. They produce a significant decrease in weight in the short and medium term (between six months and a year), and reduce the morbidity and mortality of patients with improved metabolic alterations. In a large percentage of cases remission is observed.
