Introduction: cerebrovascular disease is one of the most frequent causes of mortality and disability worldwide, its incidence and prevalence are higher as the age of the population increases. Objective: to characterize elderly stroke patients treated at the Dr. León Cuervo Rubio Hospital. Method: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out at the institution from 2015 to 2017; a sample of 138 elderly patients was selected from a population of 296 patients with clinical and imaging diagnosis of stroke in a simple randomized, probabilistic manner. Questioning, review of clinical history and application of instruments allowed obtaining the information that gave way to the variables studied. Ethical principles were respected. Results: females predominated, as well as the age group between 60 and 69 years and ischemic stroke, atherothrombotic infarction was the most representative. Consumption of an atherogenic diet was the main risk factor and paralysis of limbs was the main sequel. Severe neurological impairment and cognitive impairment predominated, the modified Rankin scale showed predominance of elderly patients moderately affected, while the Barthel index revealed it in those severely dependent. Conclusions: the characterization of stroke patients allowed us to know their particularities, which allows us to trace work strategies with this population to achieve an improvement in their quality of life and identify which factors should be studied in groups prone to develop the disease in order to prevent its appearance.
