Régimes d’écriture et de scientificité de l’histoire brésilienne au XIXe siècle : Varnhagen et le plagiat de son História geral do Brasil par Handelmann

Abstract

This article analyzes new historiographical practices related to empirical research, the writing of history, and the emergence of a new ethos for Brazilian historians during the 19th century. It discusses the genesis of new regimes of authorship and scientificity while investigating the accusation of plagiarism that Francisco Varnhagen made about Heinrich Handelmann in 1860 at the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro (IHGB). According to Varnhagen, Handelmann plagiarized excerpts from the first part of his História Geral do Brasil.
