O Perdão de Andradina de Oliveira: Modernidade e belle époque em um espaço de passagem

Abstract

Forgiveness by Andradina de Oliveira: modernity and belle époque in a crossing space aims at making a descriptive-analytical study on this novel published by Andradina de Oliveira in 1910, in the city of Porto Alegre. Andradina de Oliveira’s fiction is built through an ethnographic view which registers the heterogeneity of the city landscape in detail, highlighting power relations in terms of gender and social class. Such relations establish themselves in belle époque changes into modernity. The investigation of the city brings out discussion about southern identity in opposition to national and cosmopolitan identity, as well as discussion about modernity, which are established in a peripheral developing urban space. The conclusion demonstrates that although the novel does not take part in the literary history of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, it does deserve a place in its canon.
