Il Memoriale dell’Amnistia politica brasiliana: contesa simbolica e legittimità nella città delle “libertà”
Abstract
This article aims to analyze the political discourse around the implementation of the Brazilian Political Amnesty Memorial, in Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais. Although its construction is still in course, it is the first major initiative in terms of patrimony policies of the Brazilian state, which signals changes in federal posture, in an attempt to symbolically compensate victims of crimes committed by the military regime (1964-1985). Considering the existence of an intricate web of meanings around the space and memory, as well as political speeches and symbolic appropriations surrounding the construction of the memorial, we chose to analyze the speeches and founding myths mobilized in the construction of Belo Horizonte, a city thought and designed as a synthesis of Brazilian republican ideal. In this way, we intend to raise questions and analyze narratives around the political appropriations of different values, such as democracy and freedom, under the so-called “transitional justice”.
