The journal, Revista de Tropas Coloniales, is a unique and valuable but hitherto not fully-exploited source for the study and interpretation of Spanish colonial discourse. Between 1924 and 1936, it was one of the primary means of expression for the Spanish Africanist colonial ideology. Its editorial team was largely made up of members of the army including, most notably, Francisco Franco. The journal both reflected a redefinition of the Spanish army formulated by a sector of the military establishment in the wake of the loss of the last Spanish colonies in Cuba and the Philippines in 1898 and provided a space for the conceptualization of the ideology of Spanish-Arab brotherhood, later used by the Franco regime in forging its relations with the Arab world.
