Uluslararası Medyada Göçmen Haberlerini Çerçevelemek: Ukraynalı Göçmenlerin Medyada Temsili
Abstract
In this study, the aim is to reveal whether the news frames used in news about refugees have a decisive effect on public opinion, in line with the ideological differences of the media and the immigration policies of the countries they are aff iliated with. To this end, news about Ukrainian refugees on the websites of daily newspapers based in Türkiye, Germany, and the United Kingdom have been examined through content analysis technique based on news framing theory. In this context, Türkiye’s status as the country hosting the most refugees in the world, Germany’s acceptance of more refugees compared to other EU member countries, and the UK’s resistance to opening its doors to refugees played a decisive role in the selection of the research universe. For the sample selection, newspapers were chosen based on their ideological approaches. From Türkiye, the conservative right ideology is represented by Sabah and the left ideology by Sözcü newspapers. From Germany, the right ideology is represented by Bild and the left ideology by Zeit newspapers. From the UK, the right-wing perspective is represented by Express, and the left ideology by The Guardian newspapers’ websites. The findings obtained show that, despite the ideological viewpoints of the newspapers and the different immigration policies of the countries they are affiliated with, frames that are predominantly positive and justify the refugees, such as victimization, settlement, human interest, and responsibility, have been identified in the news about Ukrainian refugees in the analyzed newspapers.
