Intestinal ischemia resulting in enterectomy in poorly controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus with diabetic ketoacidosis
Abstract
Type 1 diabetes mellitus is seen in approximately 4.5% of children under age of 14 globally. One of the complications of uncontrolled diabetes is diabetic ketoacidosis, which is seen in about 20%–40% of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus by 18 years of age. We describe a case of intestinal ischemia due to diabetic ketoacidosis in a 13-year-old patient with a history of poorly controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus, who ultimately survived and now thriving due to early surgical intervention.
