Fundament: The content of the teaching learning process in the clinical area gathers a complex system of knowledge, abilities, methods, attitudes and habits that the students should reach in order to become a competent health professional. It is important to know if in the professional practice the students develop the abilities they need for facing the medical assistance independently. Objective: To precise the 6th year medicine students; perception about the development of their clinical abilities and to compare their self-assessment with the results of the state exam. Method: Descriptive study carried out at the Cienfuegos School of medicine ¨Dr. Raúl Dorticós Torrado¨ from Cienfuegos province. An open survey was applied to 70% of the interns who were assisting to their professional practice . Such a survey contained a valorative scale of the development of the basic abilities of the clinical method. Tutors of the primary assistance were interviewed for the collection of their opinions on the topic. Results:Interns self-assessed as fair the mastery of their clinical abilities related to the diagnostic reasoning and therapeutic decisions. The results of the state exam showed greater difficulties on physical exam and diagnostic reasoning.
