The paper contributes to an emerging literature on rural-urban migration, land arrangements and risk management in developing countries. Using data collected among migrants from the Northeast of Thailand and living in Bangkok, we describe the land arrangements and contract that are often settled with family members. Then, we qualify the nature of the risk and instability encountered by migrants in their new environment, and the risk-coping mechanisms that are available to them. Finally, we assess the specific role of land assets and land arrangements in these mechanisms. We find that farm land remains a significant safety net for migrants, even when they have migrated for many years and do not consider a future return to their village.
