Adjectives in the dialects of azerbaijani language
Abstract
In the article, the adjectives that are not encountered in the literary Azerbaijani, but used in various dialects were systematically researched. Several Azerbaijani dialects have been sufficiently researched via monographs, their dialectological dictionaries and atlases have been prepared, they have also been compared with relative languages and their dialects (Zabita Teymurlu, Sevinc Gambarova, Galiba Hajiyeva, Elvan Jafarov etc.). However, adjectives have not been specifically investigated and have been mentioned quite briefly (contrary to nouns and verbs) in textbooks. From this point of view, the topic is of particular relevance and can both be used in the teaching process at bachelor's and master's levels and act as an important source for the researchers in the fields of Turkology and dialectology. The micro and macro areas of the adjectives used in the Azerbaijani dialects were also mentioned in the article. Some of these words are observed in only one dialect, while others are found in several dialects. The words were mainly selected from the books "Azərbaycan dilinin dialektoloji lüğəti" [The Dialetological Dictionary of Azerbaijani] (2007), "Qərbi Azərbaycan şivələri lüğəti" [Western Azerbaijani Dialects Dictionary] (2008), were compared with the dictionaries of other literary Turkic languages in the Oghuz group ("Türkçe Sözlük" [The Turkish Dictionary], 1998; "Tükmence-Türkçe Sözlük" [The Turkmen-Turkish Dictionary], 1995; "Gagauz Türkçesinin Sözlüğü" [The Dictionary of the Gagauz Turkish], 1991) in addition to the Azerbaijani ones and the common words were detected. The adjectives that have lost their functionality in the literary Azerbaijani, but are preserved in various dialects were compared with Kashghari's dictionary, samples of the oral folklore ("Dede Korkut's Book", "Oguzname"), the language of the classics (Imadaddin Nasimi) and the samples extracted from those sources are mentioned in the article.
