Le développement pastoral : est-ce possible ?

Abstract

Is pastorialism suitable for development ?. Pastoralism, which still subsists in vast areas as a way of living as well as a production system, is generally on the decline. This has brought along a deterioration of the living conditions of the ethnie groups practicing it. Projects which aimed at pastoral development through range improvement have most often been a fallure, more for socio-economical than for technical reasons. The only way to ensure the survival of traditional pastoral animal husbandry is through integration into agriculture and through the creation of autonomous livestock owners' associations. In the process, pastoralism itself will disappear.
