Objectives. To indicate cleraly adventages of elective surgery in colorectal diseases as compared toduration of operation, blood consumption, the necessity for intensive care, the length of hospitalizationand mortality related to urgently operated patients. Methods: There were 177 patients monitored and analyzed in the retrospective study. Out of that number126 patients were operated in the elective programme whereas 51 patients were operated in theurgent programme. Results The urgently operated patients had on average 20 minutes shorter operation as compared to theelectively operated patients (145/125 min.). The urgently operated patients had higher blood and bloodpreparations consumption in comparison with the elective group of patients (70% vs. 15%). A considerablyhigher number of patients went to Intensive Care Units (ICU) (70% vs. 10%). Their hospitalizationwas 6 days longer (11 vs. 17days). The elective patients group had less post-operational complicationsas well as less lethal outcome as compared to those urgently operated (1,8% vs. 18%).Conclusions The screening of risky groups, constant improvement of surgical techniques, the attemptof transferring the urgent operations into the elective ones, tracking the technological progress and continuededucation are the imperative of colorectal surgery. Electively operated patients most frequentlydemand one-stage operation, they are subject to less morbidity and mortality, shorter stay in ICUs, theirtreatment is economically profitable and generally, they have a better index of life quality.
