Memoria y Civilización (Nov 2005)
Occidente, una civilización en declive
Abstract
The article offers a global overview of western civilization since the turn of the 20th century, with a particular focus on the crisis of identity provoked by the abandonment of the fundamental values on which it is based. The geographical center of the discussion is Europe, where traditional western values have been replaced by decadence and materialism; the historical account provided in the article is pessimistic, but not defeatist. In this context, and in response to the attacks on traditional western values that came first from Marxism and then from the New Left, the article argues the need for a new humanism.
