A Rare Cause of Respiratory Distress in the Newborn: Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia
Abstract
Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare inherited disease affecting the structure and function of cilia lining the respiratory tract. Neonatal respiratory distress is common in PCD. A diagnostic workup for PCD should be considered in term infant presenting with unexplained respiratory distress and either lobar collapse, situs inversus, or a prolonged oxygen therapy requirement. In this report a case is presented that was diagnosed with PCD in the neonatal period.
