When establishing the text of Garcilaso de la Vega’s poems, scholars usually take it as a rule just to reproduce either or both reference editions, respectively published in 1543 and 1569. Instead, one should take into account all existing manuscripts and printed editions. Let us consider for instance Garcilaso’s sonnet XVII, showing a number of textually problematic passages, which critical editors have so far totally avoided taking into consideration in their apparatus criticus, yet many of them prove highly relevant in order to elucidate Garcilaso’s textual tradition. Or let’s consider sonnet XXIX, on the basis of which one can easily illustrate how essential are the methods of critical bibliography when studying Garcilaso’s printed editions, both canonical and extra-canonical, i.e., in the present case, the pliego suelto dated from 1536, as well as the so-called pirated edition dated from Lisboa, 1543.
