The retention of carbon in forest plantations. Study of case: enterprise forest "Cienfuegos"
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of the plantations of the Integral Forest Company «Cienfuegos «, of the county Cienfuegos, Cuba, in the absorption of atmospheric dioxide of carbon (CO2) for retention of carbon in the biomass. The carbon retained by the forest biomass in an area of 4573,4 hectares was estimated based on the total volume of wood, the densities of the wood of each species settled down in the forest plantations, as well as a factor of expansion of biomass and the half content of carbon in the wood. It was also considered the quantity of removed CO of the atmosphere. The vegetation accumulated, at the end of 2009, 510584.5 t of carbon, for which /they were absorbed of the atmosphere 1872143.0 t of CO2. The fixation of carbon was 111.64 t of carbono/ha then. The results indicated that the forest mass of the company is a reservation of carbon of a great importance in the region and it contributes to attenuate the implications of the global heating.
