This article discusses the importance of Dermeval Saviani and his work for the Brazilian educational system. It analyzes an important author of the Brazilian social, political and pedagogical thought who became especially relevant at the turn of the century and who has remained important in the light of the current politico-pedagogical debates. As we study his work and life path, we find that Saviani has always been committed to the struggle for a fair and egalitarian society, socialization of knowledge being one of his main principles. Throughout his academic life, he has written important works that have contributed to the critical education of thousands of educators and have become classics of the Brazilian pedagogical thought, required reading to understand education in Brazil. We conclude that philosophy of education, history of education, sociology of education, and educational policies cannot be studied from a critical point-of-view without the committed reading of Dermeval Saviani’s works.
