At the end of the 1960s, the awareness of the non-objectivity of images, even photographic ones, spread in Italy, as well as in the rest of the world. Moreover, several artists and photographers dedicated their research to the reflection on the rhetoric of the media image, that started being perceived as a weapon at the service of the system. In this context, the initiatives of the Laboratorio di Comunicazione Militante, concerning a wide range of experiences, proposed an analysis of visual communication, aimed at exposing the manipulations and distortions by the system. The essay attempts to give a concise account of these researches, their formal procedure and the results they achieved
